Welcome to your guided relaxations which are designed to help you relax deeply, bond with your baby, and increase your feelings of confidence about your upcoming birth.

Why is relaxation important in pregnancy and labour?

Being in a relaxed state helps labour happen at the right speed for you and your baby and makes it as comfortable as possible. It also keeps you in your parasympathetic nervous system - your calm response in which all your good birthing hormones can flow (we will go into this more on the course).

Relaxation is a skill: the more we practice it the better at it we become. We can’t relax on demand unless we have developed the ability and tools to do so. This is why practising deep relaxation and having cues for relaxation is so important. Pregnancy is such a brilliant time to embrace relaxation as part of your life, knowing that it has benefits on a day to day basis but also knowing that you are giving yourself a powerful tool for labour and birth.

By practising now you are:

  • Lowering the stress hormone in your blood. This benefits you but also your baby as stress can reach babies via the placenta.

  • Helps you to make more rational decisions; you can think more clearly.

  • Deep relaxation helps you to get a better nights sleep.

  • Taking time to relax can help to lower your blood pressure.

  • When we are relaxed we are less likely to rate levels of pain as high. This is because pain receptors are less sensitive. Yay!

  • Relaxation can provide valuable time to bond with your baby before birth.

  • Making relaxation become second nature to you can help you to feel relaxed, calm and comfortable during labour and birth.

How the relaxation audios work & when to listen

The ‘hypno’ part of hypnobirthing is focusing on helping your unconscious mind to release any fears and worries, and to build a positive mindset. One powerful way this is done is by repeated listening to your hypnobirthing relaxation audios and practising relaxation.

Daily listening is the key!

Perhaps that's when you get into bed on a night or perhaps when you slump on the sofa after work. You find a time that works for you. The more you listen, the better! Listen with headphones or out loud. It can be useful for your birth partner too; they also want to feel calm and confident about birth.

Enjoy this time out with your baby and know that you are doing a lot of good ready for birth.

Before beginning, find yourself a comfortable space to rest. Think about creating a cosy nest for yourself with plenty of pillows and blankets. A space that is entirely yours. You could even light a candle or have some oils in a diffuser to help create a relaxing sanctuary, just as you will create a calming birth environment for yourself as the arrival of your baby draws nearer. Before starting, make sure you have visited the loo, and that your phone is turned off/on silent/do not disturb.
